What Types of Content Are Eligible for Content ID Registration?

EMVN Team2 min read|

To qualify for the use of Content ID, copyright owners must be able to provide valid proof of ownership of the content being registered.

Key requirements include:

  • The partner must hold exclusive ownership rights (100%) over the registered content (either the sound recording and/or the underlying composition, as applicable), including:
    • Content that is self-produced, or exclusively acquired from a third party for the territories in which the partner claims ownership.
    • Content must not contain audio samples or partially or fully duplicate third-party content.
  • The content must comply with YouTube's policies regarding:
    • Age-restricted content (18+)
    • Community Guidelines
    • Fraud and deceptive practices
  • The content must not already be registered with another Content ID or copyright protection service.\nIf it is currently registered elsewhere, the partner must contact that provider to remove the content and transfer it to EMVN's system.
  • For cover and remix content:
    • The partner must hold full rights to create derivative works based on the original composition.
    • The new recording must be independently produced and recorded by the partner, and must differ by at least 80% from the original recording.
    • For remix tracks: vocals may not be used in the Content ID-registered recording.

Examples of Content Typically Not Eligible for Content ID

The following types of content are generally not exclusively owned by a single party and therefore are not accepted for Content ID registration:

  • Mashups, "best of" compilations, content aggregating or rearranging multiple works (compilations, remixes)
  • Video game footage, software visuals, and trailers
  • Unlicensed music or video content
  • Licensed content that is non-exclusive
  • Audio or video recordings of live performances (including concerts, events, speeches, and stage performances)

Territorial Ownership

If the copyright owner does not hold global exclusive rights to the registered content, they must provide detailed information regarding the specific territories where exclusive ownership applies.

Content ID matching and copyright enforcement will only be applied within those authorized territories.
